PTSD, Trauma and EMDR Psychology Western Sydney

Mind Over Matter Psychological Services provides evidence-based psychological treatment for PTSD, trauma and trauma-related symptoms. Treatment is individualised according to the person’s presentation, goals, readiness and clinical needs.

Trauma-related symptoms

Trauma can affect people in different ways. Difficulties may include intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, avoidance, sleep disturbance, anxiety, irritability, low mood, emotional numbing, concentration problems and reduced confidence in everyday activities.

An assessment considers the person’s symptoms, history, functioning, strengths, current stressors and other factors that may be contributing to or maintaining the presentation.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) may be used where clinically appropriate as part of treatment for trauma-related difficulties. It is not automatically suitable for every client or every presentation. Suitability is considered as part of assessment and treatment planning.

Other treatment approaches

Treatment may also draw upon cognitive behavioural therapy, behavioural activation, graded exposure, psychoeducation, emotion-regulation strategies, sleep interventions and other evidence-based approaches. Clinical hypnosis may be considered as an adjunct where clinically appropriate.

Complex psychological injury

For some clients, trauma symptoms occur alongside chronic pain, physical injury, compensation processes, workplace conflict, legal proceedings or other significant psychosocial stressors. Treatment planning may therefore need to address both symptom reduction and practical restoration of functioning.
